Last night, Avril Lavigne performed her new single Bite Me on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with Travis Barker. The music sounded tremendous on the show, with spectators appreciating the nostalgia and being reminded of Avril’s early-2000s explosion, which the pop-punk diva revealed last week came about from feeling like it was “simply time to rock again.”
Travis Barker, who co-produced the track with John Feldmann and Mod Sun, joined her for the performance. It’s her debut single since joining with DTA Records, which is owned by Barker.
Avril recently told Zane Lowe of Bite Me: “Even though I’m reflecting on past stuff I’ve been through in relationships with love. Let’s face it – love’s not easy, right? And, I mean I’ve been through the ringer so, yeah, I’m writing about it again… and I feel like Bite Me is kind of about a guy wanting a second chance but not giving him the time of day because, you know, you did before… It didn’t work out, and having that self respect.”
Avril also spoke on the 20th anniversary of her debut album Let Go last week, saying, “I’m coming up on my 20th anniversary for my first album next year.” So this is something I’ve been doing professionally for the past 20 years. Yeah. It’s insane. People approach me and say things like, ‘Oh my God, I grew up listening to you,’ or, ‘I started music because of you.’ And it’s super-humbling and it’s really cool.
“AND I’M STOKED THAT POP-PUNK MUSIC, IT’S COMING BACK AROUND RIGHT NOW AND PEOPLE ARE FALLING BACK IN LOVE WITH IT. AND IT’S ALMOST IN A WEIRD WAY, IT FEELS BIGGER THAN EVER RIGHT NOW.”
Avril has been working on new music with Machine Gun Kelly, which she has yet to release but is rumored to be ‘in the works’. The singer has also confirmed she will return to her pop-punk roots with her next album. It will be her first since 2019’s ‘Head Above Water’ and her first release since 2002’s ‘Let Go’.
Meanwhile, Avril is planning the UK and European tour in 2022, which will include three nights at London’s O2 Academy Brixton and performance at Manchester’s O2 Apollo.
