Police in Bangladesh have arrested a journalist who is known for her strong reporting against official corruption on late Monday.
Rozina Islam is an investigative journalist for Prothom Alo newspaper, the country’s largest circulated newspaper, was detained late on Monday under the Official Secrets Act, police said.
A Secretary is the top bureaucrat of a Ministry, and therefore the room was inside the Bangladesh Secretariat, the downtown Dhaka premises where almost all government ministries are located.
Then she was handed over to the police and faces charges under the Code and Official Secrets Act for the theft and photographing of sensitive state documents, said Harun-or-Rashid, an Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
According to state media, Rozina Islam went to Health Ministry in Dhaka around 3:30 pm on Monday for a meeting with the health service secretary. During escorting by police when a reporter asked Rozina if she has anything to say, she replied, “I’m being wronged for my reports on Health Ministry.”
Journalists all over the country on Tuesday demanded immediate release of Prothom Alo Senior Correspondent Rozina Islam and punishment of those who assaulted and harassed her at the Secretariat. Journalists boycott Health Ministry’s press briefing.
