Guitar Lesson: Open Chords (Am, Bm, Am7, Cmaj7)
- Tuning: Make sure your guitar is in standard tuning (E-A-D-G-B-E).
- Posture: Sit comfortably and hold the guitar close to your body. Keep your fretting hand (usually left hand) curved and fingers positioned over the fretboard.
- Am (A minor):
- This is a very common and easy open chord.
- Place your index finger on the second fret of the B string.
- Place your middle finger on the second fret of the D string.
- Strum across all strings (except the high E string which you can mute with your thumb) to make the Am chord sound.
- Bm (B minor):
- Similar to Am, but with fingers shifted one string higher.
- Index finger on the third fret of the G string.
- Middle finger on the third fret of the B string.
- Strum across all strings (excluding high E) for Bm.
- Am7 (A minor seventh):
- Variation of Am with a “jazzy” feel.
- Same fingering as Am (index on B string, middle on D string)
- Strum all strings (excluding high E) for Am7.
- Cmaj7 (C major seventh):
- Another open chord with a bright, happy sound.
- Index finger on the first fret of the A string.
- Middle finger on the second fret of the G string.
- Ring finger on the third fret of the B string. (Optional: pinky on the third fret of the high E string for a fuller sound)
- Strum all strings for Cmaj7.
