Biden lays out vision for ‘rebuilding’ America in speech to Congress

US President Joe Biden laid out his vision for America, through a slew of policy proposals and a legislative wish list in his first address to Congress on Wednesday night. Reports Munia Iffat.

• In his first speech Joe Biden unveiled a sweeping $1.8tn package for families and education and pitched his “blue-collar blueprint” to re-build America.

• Biden said, “It’s been 100 days since I took the oath of office – lifted my hand off our family Bible – and inherited a nation in crisis.”

• “This is the worst pandemic in a century, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. The worst attack on our democracy since the civil war,” he continued.

• Biden requested Americans to continue to get vaccinated against Covid-19 and pledged that his administration would enact broad changes that would create jobs, expand the social safety net and modernize the country.

• In the second part of his speech, he sets domestic reforms spanning infrastructure, education, childcare and much more.

• Biden announced ways he wanted to improve the Affordable Care Act -commonly called Obamacare through working with Congress.

In the speech Biden also emphasized issues of racial justice, calling on Congress to pass a policing reform bill before the anniversary of George Floyd’s death next month.

Coronavirus update: Turkey sets to its first full lockdown


Later on, Thursday Turkey is entering its first full lockdown. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the country will undergo strict measure from local time 7 PM on Thursday and it will be ended on May 17. It is hoped the measures will save Turkey’s summer tourism and stop the coronavirus spread.
For the preparation for this lockdown Turkey’s streets are crowded as well as the shopping centers and the traffic heavy. Amid the ban of alcohol, locals are trying to stockpile alcohols. Their WhatsApp groups are now dominated by messages about how life will be in the coming days.
Last year, in this time Turkey was seen as a success story for its early combative action as was even praised by the World Health Organization. Now after a year, it is among the countries worst affected by COVID with the highest infection rate in Europe.
