Singer. Actress. Artist. Philanthropist. Academic. Wife. Mother. Grandmother. These and many more epithets could undoubtedly be applied to Patti Boulaye. Her career has been a long and varied one and her latest show, "Here I Am" takes us on a personal and musical journey through a fascinating life, beginning with those early years in the midst of a conflict situation in Nigeria and bringing us with her in her move to England and subsequent rise to stardom. My wife and I had the pleasure of seeing the show in the beautiful surroundings of The Hub At St. Mary's (as the name suggests, the performance area is situated in a church) in Lichfield and we were treated to various stories from Patti's life (some serious, some highly amusing), along with songs from musicals in which she has appeared, numbers from other singers who have influenced her (such as Billie Holiday and Diana Ross) and even a Pavarotti style operatic performance. The variety in the show was amazing. Never before have I listened to "Nessun Dorma" and danced to "La Bamba" on the same evening. The event was well attended by an appreciative audience and as always, it was great to catch up with Patti and her husband, Stephen. Mention must be made of Patti's regular accompanist, Alan Rogers, who provides an excellent musical backdrop and enters into the spirit of the occasion. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable evening and thanks to the friendly and helpful  staff at The Hub, who dealt with my wife's accessibility needs in a sensitive and thoughtful manner. For anyone who wants to know more about this versatile and talented performer, Patti's autobiography, "The Faith Of A Child," makes for a moving and interesting read. I wish her well as she continues to take "Here I Am" to venues around the country.
