"RUDDIGORE" AT BIRMINGHAM OLD REP

While not, perhaps, as well known as "H.M.S. Pinafore," "The Mikado," or "The Pirates Of Penzance," "Ruddigore" is nonetheless an excellent example of the combined talents of W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. Bringing together as always the charming and witty lyrics of Gilbert with Sullivan's delightful melodies, this story is set in a fictional Cornish village and features romance, trickery and the usual confusion in relationships. The balance of music and song with comedy is always a prominent feature of Gilbert and Sullivan and "Ruddigore" has these elements in abundance.

As always, the annual production by the Birmingham Savoyards is a highlight for me of the first week in March and it was great to see this particular operetta live for the first time at the regular haunt of the Old Rep. It was a very entertaining performance by all concerned, with pleasant singing, enjoyable music and interesting and amusing characters.

Speaking as a lifelong lover of the work of Gilbert and Sullivan ( I was, literally, introduced to it at my late mother's knee and will be forever grateful to her for this), I am delighted that the Savoyards continue to entertain us with their annual productions . Long may it continue. Thanks as always to Angela for arranging my visit and I look forward to seeing what we will have next year.
