Ionian mode to try on guitar: the “major scale” you already know!

• Ionian mode on guitar is built from the major scale. It’s basically the major scale itself, using the major scale formula (whole – whole – half – whole – whole – whole – half).
• Think “happy” and “bright.” It’s the most common mode used in guitar solos and riffs due to its familiar, major sound.
• Solo in Ionian using the same notes as a major scale. Experiment with the root (E for E major scale) and other major scale degrees to create melodies.
• Famous examples: Countless rock, pop, and blues solos! Think “Brown Sugar” by The Rolling Stones or “Sunshine of Your Love” by Cream.
