G Dorian Guitar Mode: A Minor Scale with a Twist

  • The Notes: G Dorian uses the same notes as G major scale, but starts on the second degree (G). This gives it a unique sound, blending characteristics of minor and major.
  • Scale Formula: 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 (whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half, whole)
  • Learning the Scale:
    • Think of it as G minor scale with the 6th degree raised a half step (B natural instead of B flat).
    • You can also connect it to G major scale shapes by starting on the G note.
    • Practice using minor 7th chord shapes like Gm7 barre chord, which uses notes within the G Dorian scale.
  • Sound and Mood: G Dorian has a bright and jazzy minor sound. It’s often described as “happy” or “hopeful” compared to the typical minor scale feel.
  • Playing in G Dorian: Use the scale for soloing, creating melodies, or composing riffs. It works well with backing tracks in Gm7 or Cm7.
  • Famous Examples: G Dorian is a favorite among jazz guitarists. You can hear its influence in the works of artists like Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, and Allan Holdsworth.

By understanding G Dorian, you’ll expand your guitar vocabulary and explore new sonic landscapes.
