London Worker’s Strike: When and Why?

London’s underground and overground have staged a 24-hours strike later this month. Previously, during the Glastonbury festival in Birmingham, rail workers staged strikes due to dissatisfaction with their employer. This strike has been staged with different disputes with workers, as confirmed by RMT.

Karl Marx, the great social and economic philosopher was of the opinion that strikes unified the working class, that they were the manifestation of class struggle. Strikes also undermine the elites of the society directly. Workers are the lubrication of society which is like the wheels. And if this gets rusted then the whole of society stops working. Strikes are a symbol of the political power of workers to control the antagonist class of society.

When is the strike scheduled?

The union members will walk out on August 19, in between strikes on August 18 and August 20.

Why has the strike been Called?

Tube workers have been in dispute over pensions and jobs for more than six months. While overground workers are no job losses, no detrimental changes to pensions, and no changes or imposition of working conditions. RMT has given an ultimatum for London until today to provide assurances that there would be no losses of jobs. But union members at Arrival Rail London have rejected a 5 percent pay offer.

Words from Union

General Secretary Mick said, ” this strike action by our members on LU and the Overground is yet another demonstration of how to transport workers refuse to accept the raw deal”.

This strike empowers the workers union and also unifies their interest to fight against the capitalist class. WhatsOn stands in solidarity with the workers’ fight and also with their struggle to improve their working conditions for a better life.
