Mori Art Museum, Tokyo

Mori Art is one of Tokyo’s most constantly innovative art museums. In the 54-story Roppongi Hills building the museum is situated on the 52 and 53rd floors. The museum features temporary artworks and installations. They never work on preserved collections. Japanese installation artist Shiota Chiharu shows her famous large-scale installations using yarn. The museum also shows video footage of performances, photographs, drawings, and performing arts-related material. The art by Shiota Chiharu was the largest-ever solo exhibition in Japan. The museum includes access to the 52nd-floor Tokyo City View observation deck and the rooftop Skydeck.

Hakone Open Air Museum, Kanagawa

Hakone is in the southwest of Tokyo and is known as a hot-spring town. With Mount Fuji, the place also got wooded hills and mountains. The town receives more than its fair share of weekend and day-trippers from the capital eager to bathe in the Onsen baths and see the area’s volcanic landscape. All visitors should visit and explore the seven-hectare Hakone Open-Air Museum, an outdoor gallery that features works by sculptors including Henry Moore and Auguste Rodin. The museum is also rich with a collection of Picasso paintings and sculptures.

Kofukuji National Treasure Museum, Nara

Kofukuji temple in Japan is situated in the former capital of Nara 45 minutes south of Kyoto by train. The Kofukuji National Treasure Museum contains an exceptional collection of Buddhist works of art including statues, books, paintings, temple bells, and ritual implements. The oldest works cumulated date from the Asuka period (538-710 AD) around the time of the temple’s founding in 669. Numerous pieces in the collection are designated National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties.

Sapporo Art Park, Hokkaido

Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido is renowned for its largest city named Sapporo. Sapporo Art Park is its standout museum which is an hour south of the city by train and bus. Sapporo Art Museum is home to 74 sculptures, each designed to complement its outdoor setting. The leafy park is only open from April to November and you can also explore the grounds on snowshoes in winter.
