"WALK RIGHT BACK-THE STORY OF THE EVERLY BROTHERS" AT LICHFIELD GARRICK

Ever since I was a boy, I have been familiar with the sound of the Everly Brothers and their combination of plaintive ballads (often dealing with the heartbreak of broken relationships) and more uptempo songs with rock 'n roll and country influences. The voices of Don and Phil blended beautifully to create a distinctive sound that was instantly recognisable.

In "Walk Right Back," James Hudson as Don and Luke Wilson as Phil, have managed to beautifully recreate those vocal sounds, accompanied by the enthusiastic guitar strumming that was so characteristic of the Everlys.  In the show, we travel with the boys from those heady days of the 1950's and their early hits (so often written by Boudleaux and Felice Byant) to their famous reunion concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1983. Along the way, we meet other rock 'n roll stars such as Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison and later, ace guitarist, Albert Lee. Lead guitarist Tom Wright does a mean impression of Holly and captures Lee's virtuoso guitar style, while Curtis Lavender fulfils the role of Orbison , as well as playing keyboard and guitar. Strong back up is provided by the rhythm section of Peter Ravenhill and Chris Webb and the standard of musicianship throughout is excellent.  We are also taken on an emotional journey as we delve into the personal lives of the Everlys and especially, the very public falling out and eventual reconciliation between the two brothers.

The show  provided a very enjoyable night out for both my daughter (who accompanied me) and myself and ended with a well deserved standing ovation for the performers. I had a great time, singing along, clapping and eventually, dancing to songs that I have loved all my life.  This is certainly a show worth watching and I wish the cast well for their forthcoming shows. Many thanks to Fletch at Chameleon Music Marketing for organising this visit for me and it was a pleasure to see this in my regular haunt of Lichfield Garrick.
