A Lydian Guitar Mode: A Scale for Bright Expressions

  • A Lydian mode is built from the A Lydian scale. This scale is just a major scale with the 4th degree raised a half step. This small change creates a distinct sound compared to the standard major scale.
  • The notes of A Lydian scale are: A, B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#. This unique arrangement of intervals (whole, whole, whole, half, whole, whole, half) gives Lydian its characteristic bright and open feel.
  • A Lydian mode can be conceptualized in two ways:
    • As a scale built from A with the 4th degree raised.
    • As the fourth mode of the E major scale. In music theory, modes are simply the different scales you can create by starting on various degrees of a major scale. So, the A Lydian mode is essentially the E major scale starting on its D note (the 4th scale degree).
  • The key feature of the Lydian sound is the #4 scale degree (D# in this case). This raised 4th creates a bright and major sound with a hint of tension. It’s sometimes described as having a “dreamy” or “otherworldly” quality.
  • A Lydian mode is a favorite among jazz guitarists for soloing. It sounds fantastic over jazz chords built on the A Lydian scale itself, or chords that share similar harmonic characteristics. Since it shares many notes with the major scale, Lydian can also be used creatively within major key contexts to add a surprising and refreshing touch to your solos.

Benefits of Leaning Lydian Guitar Mode

The Lydian mode unlocks new sonic possibilities for guitarists. Its “bright and open” character with a touch of tension adds a unique flavor to solos. Beyond just another scale, Lydian forces you to confront music theory’s building blocks, deepening your understanding of harmony. This newfound knowledge sparks creativity, helping you break free from repetitive patterns and discover your own musical voice. Plus, Lydian shares notes with the major scale, allowing you to add surprising twists to your existing major key repertoire. In short, learning Lydian expands your sonic palette, enhances your music theory knowledge, and boosts your creative potential.
