Calling all art aficionados! This July presents a remarkable opportunity to delve into a diverse range of artistic expressions across the globe. From captivating installations in Paris to thought-provoking explorations of pattern in New York, these exhibitions promise to ignite your creative spirit.

Ebba Svensson: Map over Mud at Hellvi Kännungs

  • When: 6th– 21st Jul, 2024
  • Where: Galleri Magnus Karlsson, Stockholm, Sweden

The surface and the depth of the picture in Ebba Svensson’s paintings visually compete with one another. Her distinctive and experimental technique of combining oil paint, pigment, and dry pastel on large canvases primed with hide glue results in paintings with a very physical materiality. Svensson has a fondness for parks, gardens, and artificially groomed areas. Regions that are always on the edge of becoming wild and getting back to nature, but where humans work hard to create beauty and harmony by building and taming the terrain. The themes in her paintings are similar to those seen in early 20th-century post-impressionist paintings, but they have a clear connection to the present, where the verdant foliage becomes oppressive sweetness.

Katherine Gili: Shift (1974)

  • When: 5th Jul- 31st Aug, 2024
  • Where: Felix & Spear, London

“Shift” embodies Gili’s early artistic concerns – a mastery of steel manipulation and a fascination with movement, a theme that would become central to her later work. The focus is not on representing the world but on creating a new visual language through form and material. Though details about dimensions and finish are unavailable, “Shift” undoubtedly held its own in exhibitions, marking Gili’s early success and establishing her as a sculptor unafraid to explore the possibilities of steel.

Jackie Gendel: The Architect’s Daughters

  • When: 29th Jun- 3rd Aug, 2024
  • Where: Philip Martin Gallery, Los Angeles, USA

Gendel’s free brushstrokes create an image that the viewer’s attention is drawn to, moving through a bright, interconnected pictorial space that bends before them like a reed. Jackie Gendel states, referencing French writer Paul Virilio, “I work in staircases.” Gendel’s artwork has entwined meanings that both reveal and welcome the viewer. The free-form, interpretive quality of Gendel’s paintings, which are informed by both art history and modern visual culture, engages our perception of the current world.

Sarah Sze: Pictures at an Exhibition

  • When: 25th Jun- 28th Sep, 2024
  • Where: Gagosian, rue de onthieu, Paris, France

Sze’s multi-channel video piece The ground floor of the gallery is entirely devoted to Pictures at an Exhibition (2023). An endless array of paper screens that swell outward from the middle of the room are dynamic with pictures, videos, and light; they create a porous, lit center that resembles a large-scale kaleidoscope. With chromatic projections spilling out their edges, the center gallery’s floors and walls are left with traces of light that flicker as visitors travel around the piece.

Shara Hughes: Tree Farm

  • When: 7th Jun- 20th Jul, 2024
  • Where: Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Waldmannstrasse, Zurich, Switzerland

The subject matter of Hughes’ paintings is nature as much as painting. Trees are growing not in soil but rather appear to have emerged sui generis from the sluice of underpainting. With Tree Farm, they display their creativity by providing a serial framework with a comparative play of difference—one tall tree for each vertical canvas. Every painting appears to own its own unique source of light, color scheme, and temperature, fostering within these various environments specimens.

Anselm Kiefer

  • When: 21st Jun- 24th Aug, 2024
  • Where: Gagosian, Athens, Greece

Kiefer’s paintings of landscapes aren’t just pretty pictures; they’re poems reflecting on myths, history, and nature. They explore ideas like creation, change, and life’s constant cycle. A key feature is Kiefer’s use of gold alongside other materials like paint, shellac, straw, and fabric. This mix of shiny gold and rougher textures helps him express the awe-inspiring beauty of nature and the burden of the past. The gold itself has multiple meanings: it references religious art and old stories, the idea of turning something ordinary (like lead, another material he uses) into something precious, and a lost golden age.
