Gion Matsuri

Kyoto, Japan

With roots dating back to 869, Gion Matsuri is a month-long celebration in Kyoto honoring Yasaka Shrine. It began as a way to appease the gods during an epidemic. Even today, a young boy is chosen each year to be a divine messenger, riding on a parade float for several days in July. Interestingly, despite its name, the festival’s main events are held across the Kamo River, not in the Gion district itself, but along Karasuma and Shijo streets.
