On this International Women’s Day, let’s remember women’s past struggles and ongoing fight for equality worldwide. From Iranian woman like Mahsa Amini to women in Gaza, they continue to face challenges. Today, we focus on Dalit women in Sandeshkhali, India, victims of abuse in a patriarchal society. Let’s reflect on their experiences and strive for a fairer world for all women.

The Sandeshkhali Incident: What Happened?

Sandeshkhali, a small village in West Bengal, India, has been thrust into the national spotlight following allegations of corruption and sexual assault against local leader Shahjahan Sheikh of the Trinamool Congress party (TMC). Accused of illegally seizing land and sexually assaulting women. Shahjahan evaded arrest during an Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid linked to corruption charges involving TMC leader Jyotipriya Mallick.

After the ED incident, several women came out in open, accused Shahjahan and his men of sexual harassment of several years. This case underscores power abuse and harassment against women in the region.

The political turmoil

The allegations against Sheikh have led to political turmoil, criticizing the TMC’s handling. This incident underscores a larger issue of gender-based violence and exploitation that women face globally, especially in patriarchal societies. The political feud with the BJP intensifies . Each is accusing the other of exploiting the situation for political gain before the general elections.

Patriarchy, Capitalism and Exploitation

Patriarchy, deeply rooted in societal structures, often treats women as commodities and objects for sexual pleasure. This mindset fuels incidents like those in Sandeshkhali, where women were allegedly assaulted and exploited by those in power.
Patriarchy and capitalism exacerbates this problem. While economic and power imbalance further marginalizing women and making them more vulnerable to abuse.

Women’s Protest

The women of Sandeshkhali have already taken to the streets and protested for respect, dignity and safety. Despite facing discrimination and violence, women continued to show courage and resilience to overcome the obstacles thrown at them by society.

Dalit Women’s Struggle

The women assaulted in Sandeshkhali are Dalit. It indicates the challenges faced by marginalized communities in Hindu-Brahminical society, where they are subjected to systematic oppression and violence. Caste, class, religion, ethnicity, and location make it harder for these women to access opportunities in education, politics, and corporations, compared to women of dominant upper-caste.

To truly address and eradicate such injustices, we must challenge and dismantle patriarchal structures. This International Women’s Day is a reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender inequality and the need to empower women to live free from violence and exploitation.
