Gen Z, the younger generation aged 11 to 26, has become a formidable force in a year marked global challenges- war, climate change and economic uncertainties. Beyond shaping social norms, their unique communication style; shaped by social media, TikTok and crafted slangs has profound impact on the English language—analysing the intricate fabric of linguistic evolution by this ‘digitally native’ generation.

Slangs and Abbreviations

Slangs have always been a linguistic playground and Gen Z has mastered the art of expression through inventive phrases. The term “cap” is not just about a head covering but a Gen Z way of calling out falsehoods or exaggerations. “Bet” signifies agreement, showcasing how language evolves to suit the preferences of the generation. The abbreviations such as “ICYMI” (In Case You Missed It) and “BRB” (Be Right Back), blurring the lines between formal and informal communication.

Hashtags: Language for Activism

Hashtags have become a Gen Z phenomenon, serving as powerful tools for cultural expression and activism. Whether it’s #ClimateActionNow and #BLM-Black Lives Matter, these hashtags are not just symbols; they exemplify Gen Z’s ability to harness the digital landscape for social change. They go beyond mere trends, becoming vehicles for activism.

Humour and Memes

Gen Z’s humour thrives in memes, a unique form of communication that goes beyond funny
images, offering relatability. They transform phrases like “delulu” into self-care with “Being delulu is the solulu,” redefine “to serve” for looking good, and turn “slap” into a term for something exceptionally good. Even “rizz,” inspired by Tom Holland, now denotes flirting ability, reflecting the influence of TikTok trends.

Impact on Email-Writing

Even in the realm of formal communication, Gen Z brings its distinctive touch. Traditional email closings like “Best regards” are being replaced by more casual alternatives like “Cheers” or even abbreviations like “BR”. Showcasing a blurring of lines between formal and informal language in professional settings.

Consumer Culture and Influencer Impact

The Gen Z is significantly influenced by consumer culture and the rise of social media influencers. Expressions like “flex”, and “ootd” (outfit of the day) originate from the culture of showcasing possessions. And outfits on social platforms, reflecting a fusion of digital identity and material expression.

Digital Globalization of English

The lexicon of Gen Z has a borderless nature of communication. Expressions like “vibes” and
“savage” transcend borders, creating a shared language that connects Gen Z across cultures. This globalization of the English language reflects the interconnected nature of today’s digital world. Also, Gen Z-created words like “vaxxed” (being fully vaccinated) and “FOMO” (fear of missing out), “HMU”, “SMH”, “TBH”, “LMAO”, “woke-fishing”, “zoomtown”, “lit”, “IMO” into
mainstream lexicon.

Gen Z’s influence on the English language is not merely linguistic; it reflects a generation’s
resilience and commitment, mirrors societal shift seen in formal and informal contexts. Beyond language, Gen Z advocates mental health, the environment, and political issues showcasing its voice to advocate for positive change. Their linguistic legacy reflects adaptability, inclusivity, and a transformative narrative for changing the world.
