Tens of thousands of climate activists marched through the streets of New York City on Sunday in a “march to end fossil fuels.” The march was organized by a coalition of climate groups, including the Sunrise Movement, Extinction Rebellion, and 350.org.

Marchers chanted slogans such as “Keep it in the ground” and “Climate justice now!” They demanded that the government take immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to a clean energy economy.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) spoke to the crowd at the end of the march. She praised the protesters for their courage and determination, and urged them to continue fighting for climate justice.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speaks at the rally at the finish of the march to end fossil fuels in New York on 17 September 2023.

“This movement must become too big and too radical to ignore,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “We must build a movement that is so powerful that it forces the government to take action.”

The march was a powerful demonstration of the growing public support for climate action. It also highlighted the increasing diversity of the climate movement, which is now led by people of color, Indigenous people, and working-class people.

Marchers Demand Climate Action

The marchers’ demands were clear and concise: they want the government to take immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to a clean energy economy.

They also called for an end to subsidies for the fossil fuel industry, and for a just transition for workers in the fossil fuel industry.

The marchers’ demands are in line with the latest scientific evidence, which shows that we need to take drastic action to reduce emissions in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

AOC Urges Movement to Become “Too Big and Too Radical to Ignore”

In her speech at the end of the march, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez urged the climate movement to become “too big and too radical to ignore.”

She said that the movement needs to be so powerful that it forces the government to take action on climate change.

Ocasio-Cortez’s call to action is a reminder that the climate movement is still in its early stages. We need to build a movement that is large, diverse, and powerful enough to force the government to make the necessary changes to address the climate crisis.

Protest Highlights Growing Movement for Climate Justice

The march in NYC was just one of many climate protests that took place around the world on Sunday. It is a sign of the growing movement for climate justice.

The climate movement is now led by people of color, Indigenous people, and working-class people. These are the communities that are most impacted by the climate crisis, and they are leading the fight for a just and sustainable future.

The march in NYC was a powerful demonstration of the strength and determination of the climate movement. It is a movement that is growing stronger every day, and it is a movement that will not stop until we achieve climate justice.
