Hundreds of activists demonstrated in Nairobi on Monday, September 4, 2023, to protest the Africa Climate Summit. Which held in the Kenyan capital this week. The protesters, who included members of civil society groups, environmental organizations, and youth movements, accused the summit of being exclusionary and of not doing enough to address the climate crisis.

The protesters marched through the streets of Nairobi, carrying signs that read “Climate Justice Now!” and “Africa Deserves Better.” They also chanted slogans calling for an end to fossil fuel production and for increased investment in renewable energy.

In a statement, the protesters said that the Africa Climate Summit is “a missed opportunity to address the climate crisis in Africa.” They called on the summit to adopt a more ambitious agenda. Including commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, phase out fossil fuels, and provide financial assistance to developing countries to help them adapt to climate change.

The Africa Climate Summit is a major event that brings together African leaders, climate experts. And representatives from the private sector to discuss the continent’s response to climate change. The summit expected to produce a declaration that outlines a plan for Africa to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

However, the protesters said that the summit is not doing enough to address the needs of the most vulnerable people in Africa. Who already disproportionately affected by climate change. They called for the summit to adopt a more people-centered approach that prioritizes the needs of the poor and marginalized.

The Africa Climate Summit is a critical opportunity for Africa to take a leading role in the global fight against climate change. However, the success of the summit will depend on whether it can address the concerns of the activists. And ensure that it is truly inclusive and representative of the needs of all Africans.

In addition to the protests in Nairobi, there were also demonstrations in other African cities, including Johannesburg, Lagos, and Accra. The protests are part of a growing movement of climate activists in Africa. Who are demanding that their governments take urgent action to address the climate crisis.
