EXIT is Serbia’s biggest festival, known for its drum n’ bass and techno music. This year, the festival is celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop by hosting a program of international and regional rappers. The festival held in Jul 6, 2023 –Jul 9, 2023.
Hip-hop was born in the Bronx, New York City, in 1973. DJ Kool Herc is credited with founding the genre’s distinct sound by spinning two copies of the same record at the same time, creating a breakbeat that could be used for breakdancing.
Hip-hop has since spread far beyond its South Bronx origins to become a global phenomenon. In Serbia, hip-hop has taken on a whole new meaning, as it has become a way for people to express their identity and culture.
Day 1
The festival, situated in the historic Petrovaradin Fortress, holds a special place in the hearts of locals, drawing them in with its eclectic music lineup. From Balkan folk to Serbian garage punk and the energetic performance of Swedish punk band Viagra Boys, the festival kicks off with a bang. The Prodigy, making their return to Serbia without the late Keith Flint, deliver an electrifying set that showcases their enduring impact. Chase and Status and a lineup of talented female DJs keep the dance stage alive, creating a pulsating atmosphere within the fortress’s ancient walls.
Day 2
The main stage features Dutch symphonic metal band Epica, bringing a Eurovision-inflected mix to set the tone for the evening’s headliner, Skrillex. Skrillex’s return to the spotlight is evident as he delivers an anthemic set accompanied by pyrotechnics and a dazzling light show. Meanwhile, Swedish DJ Eric Prydz mesmerizes the crowd with his eclectic trance beats and stunning visual displays. In the dance arena, the high-octane performance of Serbian rapcore group Sunshine captivates the audience. Their fusion of punk and rap influences creates an invigorating atmosphere.
Day 3
The main stage highlights talented female artists in Serbia’s rap scene, including Sajsi MC and Mimi Mercedez. Sajsi MC’s feminist message and catchy hooks create an empowering atmosphere, while Mimi Mercedez brings an aggressive and punchy style to her performance. Both artists embrace sex-positivity in their lyrics and have garnered a loyal following. Later in the evening, the dynamic duo Sofi Tukker delivers an incredible set, blending various dance genres and showcasing their musical virtuosity.
Day 4
Mimi Mercedez @EXIT Festival 2023British post-punk band Dry Cleaning kicks off the evening with their spoken-word delivery and energetic guitars. The celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary takes center stage at the main stage, with the Blackout 30 Showcase featuring talented artists such as Prti Bee Gee, Bolesna Braca, Smoke Mardeljano & AJS Nigrutin, Bege Fank, and Phat Phillie. The anticipation reaches its peak as Wu-Tang Clan, the legendary rap group, takes the spotlight. With their full crew and a live band, they deliver an electrifying performance of their greatest hits, paying tribute to Ol’ Dirty Bastard along the way. Wu-Tang Clan’s return to EXIT is met with immense enthusiasm from the Serbian crowd, who celebrate the essence of rap music.
