Meta has recently launched a new app, Threads, in the US and the UK. Since its initial launch on Thursday 6th July after only been active for 5 days, over 100m users have already joined the app.
Threads poses an obvious threat for Twitter. Threads already has over 100million users, making it the fastest growing consumer app ever. Twitter, in comparison, is sitting with 350 million users since its launch in 2006. Meta relies heavily on the users that are already on Instagram. Instagram is helping in the rise to power of threads as the 1.386 billion users from Instagram could join Threads.
There are speculations as to the obvious similarities between Threads and Twitter. The design of Threads is instantly recognisable to that of Twitter. Twitter's Elon Musk has said that "competition is fine, cheating is not", however Meta has denied claims in a legal letter that ex-Twitter staff helped to create Threads.
So, is threads a threat for Twitter? Most definitely, yes. The sheer popularity and connections that Threads holds grasps power over Twitter as threads becomes 'the newer Twitter'.
