Is history boring to you? Well, then this part of the story won't make you bored at all! After discussing the history of ballet in the previous part, we'll be diving into the ballet's category and styles in the last part of the article today.

Ballet has various categories - story ballets, plotless ballets, and different styles among them - classical, neoclassical, and contemporary.

Story ballets, as you can already have a guess - it tells a story. They possess narrative motion, characters, a beginning, and an ending. The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty are famous story ballets from the 19th century; classic stories and novels such as The Great Gatsby and The Three Musketeers also have been remade into ballets.

Plotless ballets have no storyline. Instead, they employ the movement of the body and theatrical components to interpret music, form an image or express or elicit emotion. Choreographer George Balanchine was a prolific architect of plotless ballets.

We have mentioned three types of style in ballet - classical, neoclassical, and contemporary. Like every other form of art, classical one is what people generally think of first, and it isn't incorrect in ballet either.

Classical ballet acquired its peak in 19th- century Russia through the creation of choreographers like Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. The following elements characterize this style: graceful, flowing movements classical form: turn-out of the legs and pointe work, balance and symmetry, emphasis on story, elaborate sets, and costumes.

The neoclassical ballet was presented in the 20th century by choreographers like George Balanchine. It generally includes increased speed, energy and attack, manipulation of the classical form, asymmetry, an off-balance feel, non-narrative, often one-act ballets, pared-down aesthetic with simple sets and costumes.

Contemporary ballet is influenced by modern dance. Eminent contemporary ballet choreographers include Twyla Tharp, Jiří Kylián, Paul Taylor, William Forsythe, and Dwight Rhoden. In contemporary ballet, you may see: floor work, turn-in of the legs, greater range of movement and body line, pointe shoes but also bare feet.

But what's the point of pointe shoes? Well, until next time!

  • 𝗪𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲? 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁 - 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲.

By now, probably all of us have seen snaps from the recent photo of Mubashshira Kamal Era's ballet dance in front of Raju Memorial Sculpture of Dhaka University (DU) on social media.

It is now trending on social media as critics are sharing their views on it. Certainly, we have seen some of them too, but how much do we know about ballet dance?

Ballet is an art form created by the movement of the human body. It is theatrical, which means it's performed on a stage to an audience utilizing costumes, scenic design, and lighting. Ballet can narrate a story or voice a thought, concept, or sentiment. Ballet dance can be magical, exciting, provoking, and sometimes disturbing.

Ballet originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century. It originated from the upper class of the society, mainly from their lavish events, especially wedding celebrations. In the 16th century, Catherine de Medici — an Italian noblewoman, wife of King Henry II of France, began to fund ballet in the French court. Her enchanting festivals boosted the blossoming of ballet de cour, a program that possessed dance, decor, costume, song, music, and poetry.

A century later, King Louis XIV helped to popularize and standardize ballet. By 1661, a dance academy had opened in Paris, and in 1681 ballet shifted from the courts to the stage. The French opera 𝘓𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦 𝘭’𝘈𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘳 incorporated ballet elements, forming a long-standing opera-ballet tradition in France. Early classical ballets such as 𝘎𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦 and 𝘓𝘢 𝘚𝘺𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘥𝘦 originated during the Romantic Movement in the first half of the 19th century.

In the early part of the 20th century, Russian choreographers Sergei Diaghilev and Michel Fokine began to experiment with movement and costume, moving beyond the confines of classical ballet form and story. He introduced what is now known as neoclassical ballet, an expansion on the classical form. He also is regarded by many as the grandest innovator of the contemporary “plotless” ballet. With no definite storyline, its aim is to use movement to depict the music and to illustrate human emotion and endeavor.

Today, ballet is multi-faceted. Classical forms, traditional stories, and contemporary choreographic innovations intertwine to produce the character of modern ballet.

We can also see various categories of ballet - story ballets, plotless ballets, and different styles among them - classical, neoclassical, and contemporary. In the second part, we will dive into these categories and styles.

Once upon a time, a politician, a priest and a journalist was traveling together and at night they were passing by a ranch and they needed a place to stay.
They found the ranch owner and asked if they could have a place to stay for the night.
The ranch owner said that he has space for 2 extra people in his house and someone has to stay in the barn with the horses.
The priest offered himself up to stay in the barn. He said as a religious figure I should set an example and went to the barn to sleep.
In about half an hour, he came back and knocked on the ranch owners door. He couldn't stay in the barn anymore as he said "it smells".

The politician was a show off and to show off he went next to stay in the barn. And in half and hour he also came back as expected and said.. "it really smells in there"

The journalist said, "no prob. I can stay in the barn" and to the barn she went.

    10 mins later...
The horse knocked on the door and asked the house owner for a different place to stay. As it was stressed out from being asked over and over "APNAR ONUVUTI KI?"
