How We Created Our First Custom Soap Box

When we first started making handmade soap, everything was small-batch, made in our kitchen, and wrapped by hand in simple kraft paper. It worked — for a while. But as our custom soap boxes gained popularity, especially online and at local markets, we knew it was time to level up. Our soap needed a box. Not just any box — a custom soap box that would reflect the heart of our brand.

Here’s the story of how we went from hand-wrapping bars to creating a custom box that changed the way people saw our soap — and our business.


Step 1: Realizing the Need for Better Packaging

At first, we resisted. We thought the quality of our soap would speak for itself — and it did, to loyal customers. But to new buyers, our plain wrapping didn’t reflect the premium ingredients, artistry, or care that went into each bar.

We started getting feedback like:

“I love the soap, but it doesn’t look very giftable.”
“Do you have packaging that lists the ingredients?”
“Your soap smells amazing, but I couldn’t tell which scent was which!”

That’s when we realized: if we wanted to grow, our packaging needed to work for us — not against us.


Step 2: Defining Our Brand Personality

Before even touching a design tool, we sat down and asked:
“Who are we, and how do we want people to feel when they see our soap?”

We listed words that described our brand:

  • Natural

  • Handcrafted

  • Uplifting

  • Clean

  • A little rustic, but refined

This helped us choose the right colors (soft earth tones), fonts (modern with a handmade touch), and language (warm, honest, no fluff). We weren’t just designing a box — we were shaping our brand’s identity.


Step 3: Choosing the Right Box Style

Next, we explored box types. Did we want a full enclosure? A wrap? A sleeve? A window cut-out?

We chose a tuck-end box with a small die-cut window — it let customers see the soap’s texture and color while protecting the product and offering room for branding.

We wanted:

  • A clear scent label

  • Ingredient list

  • Our story, simply told

  • A logo that felt handcrafted, not corporate

The box became a blank canvas — and we were ready to paint.


Step 4: Working With a Packaging Supplier

This part was intimidating — until we found a supplier who offered low minimums and helped us with the technical side (die lines, bleeds, paper stock). We chose recycled kraft board, printed in soy-based ink — because sustainability matters to us, and our customers.

We sent them our design files, waited nervously, and when the sample arrived… it was like holding our brand in our hands for the first time.


Step 5: The First Market Test

We brought the new boxes to our next local market. The results?

  • People picked up the soap more often

  • They asked about the story behind the box

  • Several said they were buying it just because it looked like the perfect gift

  • Our sales increased — and so did our confidence

Even online, customers mentioned the box in reviews:

“Beautiful packaging — it felt like opening a present!”
“Love the eco-friendly design. Will be buying again!”


What We Learned

  • Packaging matters — it sets expectations before the product is even used.

  • Small touches go a long way — like scent-matched colors, embossed logos, or a simple printed “thank you” inside.

  • Your box tells your story — and helps your soap stand out in a crowded market.

Creating our first custom soap box wasn’t just a design project — it was a turning point. It helped us show up in a bigger, more confident way, without losing the heart of what makes our brand special.
