" EDDIE COCHRAN 65TH ANNIVERSARY" AT REDDITCH PALACE THEATRE

In April 1960, Eddie Cochran, one of the influential rock 'n roll pioneers who emerged from the U.S.  in the 1950's, was tragically killed in a road accident (in which his girlfriend, songwriter, Sharon Seeley and fellow rock'n roller, Gene Vincent were also seriously injured)  in the West Of England while on a U.K. tour.  it was great to be able to go to the Palace (always an enjoyable place to attend concerts), as we remembered the 65th anniversary of his passing.

During the evening, we were treated to a wide selection of the songs that Eddie made famous (classics like "Twenty Flight Rock," Summertime Blues," "C'mon Everybody" and my personal favourite Cochran number "Nervous Breakdown").  As well as this, we were reminded  of Eddie's contemporaries, such as Gene Vincent, Duane Eddy,  British artists Billy Fury and Marty Wilde and in particular, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper, who had been tragically killed in a plane crash the previous year.

The Gold Star band, who performed all the songs, displayed excellent musicianship, clear vocals ( I could pick up every word), with a variety of members taking the lead vocal and a dynamic onstage presence, with narrative from lead guitarist Adrian and background film adding to the atmosphere of the occasion. The audience was small but appreciative (it's a pity that more people didn't come out to see and hear such a great show) and afterwards, it was a pleasure to chat to the band members and promoter, Ann. Many thanks to Laura at the Palace for organising my visit and I wish Gold Star well, as they continue to bring Eddie's songs to the theatres in this generation.
