On the night of 16th August 1977, a teenage rock 'n roll fan in Northern Ireland was sitting on his bed, listening to John Peel's programme on Radio 1. Suddenly, an announcement came. " I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but we have an as yet unconfirmed report from Memphis Tennessee that Elvis Presley has died." A few minutes later, the report was confirmed. On the forty-fifth anniversary of his passing, it has been good to listen again to some of the songs recorded by, undoubtedly, one of the greatest entertainers of the twentieth century and a huge influence on so many other artists. As John Lennon himself said, "Without Elvis, there would have been no Beatles."
