Chris Pratt will play Mario in a planned animated film based on the Super Mario Bros. game brand, according to Nintendo. Princess Peach is voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy, Luigi is voiced by Charlie Day, Bowser is voiced by Jack Black, and Toad is voiced by Keegan-Michael Key.

Mario will be playing as Pratt, and his brother, Luigi, will be played by Charlie Day. Princess Peach will be voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy, while Bowser and Donkey Kong will be played by Jack Black and Seth Rogen, respectively. Fred Armisen (Cranky Kong), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek), and comic Sebastian Maniscalco (Spike) and other Super Mario characters from the early 1990s will also appear in the film.

The film will be released on December 21, 2022, by Universal Pictures’ Illumination Entertainment, as announced during a Nintendo Direct webcast. The project is co-financed by Nintendo and Universal.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Super Mario, and Chris Meledandri, the founder of Illumination, are co-producers on the film. Aaron Hovarth and Michael Jelenic will direct the film, which will have a script by Matthew Fogel.

During the Nintendo Direct, Meledandri said he was excited to reveal the film’s cast and release date. Explained as

 “HONORED TO HAVE THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK SO CLOSELY WITH SHIGERU MIYAMOTO AND THE WIDELY IMAGINATIVE TEAM AT NINTENDO TO BRING THESE CHARACTERS TO LIFE”.
