Machine Love: Video Game, AI and Contemporary Art
Date: February 13 – June 8, 2025
Location: Mori Art Museum, Tokyo

As Freddie Mercury once asked, ‘Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?’ Given the steady creep of artificial intelligence into our lives, where we are now is a bit of both. This is the idea behind Mori Art Museum’s international group exhibition Machine Love: Video Game, AI and Contemporary Art. The show brings together 13 artists who use machine learning and generative gaming systems to create hybrid landscapes and identities.
Featuring Anicka Yi’s algorithmic, biomorphic ‘paintings’ and Lu Yang’s videogame avatar navigating a Buddhist afterlife, the exhibition blurs the lines between human and machine. Highlights include Beeple’s video installation Human 1 (2021), featuring an astronaut in silver spandex wandering a barren landscape, and Sato Ryotaro’s Inorganic Friends (2023), where a corporate office teems with werewolves, ninjas, and wrestlers. This futuristic yet oddly familiar world is one you won’t want to miss.
