Wonder Woman: Asian Women Portray

The ‘Wonder Women’ exhibition is curated by Kathy Huang. The exhibition presents thirty Asian American and diasporic women. All the non-binary artists respond to the themes of wonder, self, and identity through figuration.

The theme is inspired by Genny Lim’s poem ‘Wonder Women’. The poem was first published in 1981 and reflects the everyday lives of Asian women. The narrator observes the lives of women across countries, generations, and socioeconomically. The author tries to explore what commonalities exist between Asian women. Artists depicted the wonder in many forms in their own sense. Some related it to mythology and legend and other artists highlighted their actual life heroines. They pointed out the works that feature history, family, and community.

Here are some lines from the poem ‘Wonder Women’ by Genny Lim-

I LOOK AT THEM AND WONDER IF
THEY ARE A PART OF ME
I LOOK IN THEIR EYES AND WONDER IF
THEY SHARE MY DREAMS

Few of the works address the colonial and patriarchal structure of the west in the Wonder Women exhibition. Most of the artists of the Wonder Women exhibition are collaborators and friends across cities such as New York, London, Los Angeles, Austin, and Montreal.

The exhibition art show presents how the violence is increasing against Asian and Americans, especially against the elderly Asian women. Artists emphasize the need of telling their own stories. Curator Kathy Huang is Managing Director, Art Advisory & Special Projects at Jeffrey Deitch.

The exhibition gives artists the opportunity to allow figuration of their own history, their communities, and themselves. The work offers to evaluate a cross-section of experience which involves showing the difference and points of connection at the same time. This new exhibition at the Jeffrey Deitch gallery in New York is going on from May 7 to June 25, 2022.
