Gema Quiles: Somewhere, Someone

  • When: 2 Oct – 26 Oct 2024
  • Where: LKIF Gallery, Seoul

Quiles’ paintings depict a fictional natural space where people interact with their environment. The characters in these paintings are gathering elements from nature, not just for themselves but also for others. This act of collecting represents a ritual of exchange, care, and offering. The flowers, fruits, branches, butterflies, and water in the paintings contribute to the ambiguous setting, which is neither fully real nor unreal. The objects that the characters collect are not just random items; they are imbued with meaning and significance. By collecting these objects, the characters are not only taking a piece of nature for themselves but also preserving a moment in time, a fleeting beauty that they wish to share with others.

  • Where: Hauser & Wirth, Hong Kong

The students will create a mural in the Bridge+ space depicting a map of Hong Kong and install their own “Merchant Posters” alongside it.

ob: Water Line

  • When: 14 Sep – 9 Nov 2024
  • Where: Perrotin Hong Kong, Hong Kong

ob’s paintings depict a serene world where soft colors, misty scenes, and wide-eyed girls create a peaceful atmosphere. The artist uses oil pastels to create a hazy, dreamlike quality that evokes emotions and invites viewers to contemplate the boundary between reality and dreamscape. Water plays a central role in ob’s paintings, serving both as a subject and a medium. The artist explores water’s fluidity, uncertainty, boundaries, and transparency, reshaping reality through subjective distortions. In this world, mermaids and winged girls coexist with familiar scenes, creating a sense of uncertainty and mystery.

ob’s characters are symbolic representations of the human mind, embodying various possibilities and exploring the complexities of life. She believes that embracing subjectivity and imagination is essential for understanding the world and finding harmony with others.
