Manchester United have handed Edinson Cavani a one-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2022.

The Uruguayan forward has impressed since moving to England on a free-transfer last summer, scoring 15 goals in all competitions.

‘El Matador’ has also made a huge impact with boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the Norwegian reportedly ‘desperate’ to keep him for another season.

The new deal - believed to be worth £250,000 per-week - will end speculation of the former Napoli and Paris St. Germain returning to South America, with Boca Juniors believed to have been interested in his signature.

Cavani showed why his signature was so hotly coveted on Thursday night, bagging a brace as United progressed to the Europa League final despite losing 3-2 to Italian side Roma on the night.

Speaking on the new deal, Cavani said: “Over the season, I have developed a great affection for the club and everything that it represents. I feel a deep bond with my team-mates and the staff who work behind the scenes here. They give me extra motivation every day and I know that, together, we can achieve special things.

“From the very first moment that I arrived, I felt the confidence of the manager. As a player, this belief gives you the perfect opportunity to play your best football and I want to thank him for that.

“I have been touched with how much the supporters have wanted me to stay, and I will give everything to bring them happiness and joy with my performances on the field. I’ve not yet been able to play in front of the Old Trafford crowd and that is something that I cannot wait to do.”
