We are now approaching the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings (otherwise known as "D Day"), one of the most significant events of the Second World War and a turning point in the fight against the tyranny that threatened to engulf the world in the 1940's. It was therefore, an ideal time to enjoy the visit of the D Day Darlings to Sutton Coldfield Town Hall on their anniversary tour. They have done much over the last few years to bring the great songs of the war years to audiences in many different places and this was a show well worth attending. Throughout the evening, we were treated to all the great British songs that we associate with this period, as well as material from across the Atlantic, made famous by artists such as Glen Miller and The Andrews Sisters. Dame Vera Lynn (undoubtedly, the most iconic musical figure from this time) has clearly been a huge influence on Katie, the group's founder and producer and it was a pleasure to see funds being raised for the charities that bear her name.
The whole evening was most enjoyable and the Darlings were supported by the D Day Juniors and the Sutton Coldfield Voices Choir, who made their own valuable contributions to the proceedings. For me personally, it was a particularly poignant occasion as it occurred on what would have been the 100th birthday of my late mother and I was delighted to hear once again the songs that provided the musical backdrop to her youth. It was great to have a chat with the group after the show and I wish them well as they continue to remind us of the fine musical legacy that we have from those dark years of wartime and to sing again the songs that inspired a generation.
