Spring is in the air! Christmas has been and gone for another year. Summer is calling and we’ve all survived semester one and most of semester two! Whilst everybody is in the holiday spirit planning their getaways there are some wonderful things to do in Brum in the meantime when the sun is shining and when the weather is being very British and chucking it down! There is something for everybody from those who love the creative side of things to those looking for a good time on a budget. There’s some lovely food as well so keep reading to see what you can get up to with your friends, coursemates or even with your flatmates in tow. Here’s what you can get up to in between lectures or on your day off:
- Visit Boston Tea Party
A fry up is the best cure for a hangover after a big night, everybody knows that. The beautiful selection of cakes here is a bonus! The pricing is very affordable meaning this is the perfect place for your and your friends to meet in the spring for a post night out debrief.
- Visit the botanical gardens
Nature is fascinating! You can see it right here on your doorstep in Birmingham. This is the perfect place to go to explore nature whilst expierence s the tos and throws of inner city university life.
- Explore centenary square and the Birmingham library
This is within walking distance of Broad Street, New Street, rand Central and the Bullring. Not only is the building stunning and right where the centenary bull used to be; It even has a balcony where you can sit and read while taking in the spring air.
- Visit Luna springs
The best spot for fun activities! This aesthetic venue has various events including theme nights, Bongo Bingos with a variety of food and drinks available at the two bars in the venue.
- Visit Eastside Projects
Head to the FREE public art gallery based in Digbeth to see exhibitions and art projects. The gallery is open 12-5pm Wednesday-Saturday. You can even for £5 a month join the EOP (extra ordinary people), an artists development scheme based in Brum’s Eastside Projects.
- Visit The Hive Cafe & Bakery
Hungry? Pop into this award winning, organic cafe and bakery based in a historic building. The Hive Cafe and Bakery are part of a community hub for Birmingham with workshops, exhibitions and event spaces available.
- Visit Roxy Ball Room
In Victoria Square you can check out this gem! Roxy Ball room, opening February 10th 2023 with a full cocktail and food menu available. You can get involved with bowling, ping pong, Crazy pool and so much more! There’s even Karaoke!
- Visit NQ64
Based in Birmingham’s Custard factory NQ64 is the place to be. Gaming and cocktails, now that’s a combination most people can get behind! What’s not to like?
- Visit Escape Hunt
Students get 15% off with a valid student ID Monday- Thursday. You can choose between Virtual reality games and even outdoor games as well as classic escape rooms. For the escape rooms there are lots of different options and themes to choose from for your very own customisable experience.
- Visit Vivid Projects
Wander through this events space to explore the many works created in collaboration with a variety of artists.
- Visit National SEA LIFE Centre
This is a fun group activity for you and your friends to do when it’s spring and the weather is being typically British. There are even student offers on certain days!
- Visit The Brunch Club
Everybody loves brunch! It is the perfect in between meal and it is always great to brunch at lots of different places. So, add the brunch club to your list of unique brunch spots to try! There’s even a bottomless option- woo hoo!
- Visit BOM (Birmingham Open Media)
BOM is based in Norfolk house, founded in 2014 the creative arts organisation hosts immersive creative events with digital and technology at the forefront of their work.
- Visit Winterbourne House and Garden
A short distance from the city centre is the home to 6,000 plant species. This Edwardian attraction will blow you away with the beauty behind its walls with all the history the building has to offer. Admission is from £7.40.
- Visit Birmingham Cathedral St Phillip’s
This is perfect if you were looking to delve deeper into the history of Brum do some sightseeing on a Spring day with the sun shining.
- Visit Eastside city park
Opened in 2013 this park is an exciting modern take on a green space with local food places a stone's throw away from BCU where you can sit and chill in the sunshine with your friends.
- Tour the Graffiti art of Digbeth
If you want to get to grips with your uni city this summer this is perfect for you to get out in the fresh air and have a wander around. Digbeth is the best place to get involved with creativity and the arts within Brum.
- Visit the iconic Custard Factory
Not only is this an iconic part of Brum’s story and a great photo opportunity it houses some fantastic bars and restaurants.
- Visit Roller Jam Digbeth
Get your skates on and wheel into Roller Jam Digbeth, Birmingham’s first custom built skating arena and nightclub with lots of themed events on offer including club Tropicana and eat my disco. Get your hand on Roller Jam’s gourmet street food and drinks. You can book online at Skiddle.
- Visit Victoria Street Gallery
Based in Brum’s very own Jewelry Quarter, Victoria Street Gallery celebrates creative practices at the art of the jewelry discipline with a range of artist’s work on display from commercial to contemporary. The gallery explores digital technologies, experimental thinking and new ideas
- Visit Tilt Birmingham
Run don’t walk to this local hangout with Brum’s best craft beer, speciality teas and coffees on offer. Whilst you’re hanging out you can challenge your mates with a game on the pinball machines. What’s not to like?
- The Big Birmingham bake
Gather your mates and let the competition commence to see who the best baker is! Zero experience is needed for the 90 minute fun competition where you can bake a new item every month ranging from Jamey cakes to posh eclairs. Can you be the next Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood?
- Concert spots
Don’t forget there are some regular concert spots available in Brum including Resorts World Arena, O2 Academy Birmingham, ICC and the NIA. Many artists tour in Birmingham make sure to check them out!
- Royal Birmingham Conservatoire
Lots of events here often for free to attend. There’s something for everyone with musicians and theater on offer. Lots of students premier their work here so you could get a chance to see the next big star on stage in Birmingham
