Frank Field, who passed away recently, served as M.P. for Birkenhead for 40 years (1979-2019), mainly as a member of the Labour Party, but latterly, as an Independent.  Having lost his seat in 2019, he entered the House of Lords in 2020.

Frank Field was originally a member of the Conservative Party, but resigned in the early 1960's over his disagreement with party policy on apartheid in South Africa. In the context of the Labour Party, he was seen as being on the right wing, but was also known as a freethinker, who would stand up against the party line if it was something with which he disagreed. On one occasion, a political correspondent was prompted to ask the question, "Why the hell is Frank Field still a member of the Labour Party?"  Frank was respected by politicians from all parties because of his integrity and commitment to standing up for principles which he believed to be right.

Frank Field's strong social conscience and involvement in politics were motivated to a large extent by his Christian faith and he also gave many years of service to the Church, as a member of the General Synod of the Church of England. Frank's passing is mourned by his friends both inside and outside the world of politics and many people (especially in his long time constituency of Birkenhead) are grateful for his honest, dedicated and hard working approach. He and his contribution to a variety of aspects of life will be sadly missed and he leaves behind a legacy which is an example to all.
