- Veganism has gained popularity among students, with a significant number expressing interest in adopting a vegan diet. However, concerns about affordability remain a major barrier for many. According to research conducted by The Vegan Society, 28% of students believe that a vegan diet is too expensive for them.
To address this issue, The Vegan Society has launched the Live Vegan For Less Campaign, specifically targeting students. As part of this campaign, they have made membership to the society free for individuals under 26 years old and have created student-focused resources.
The rising cost of living in the UK has affected students as well, with increasing bills for essentials like food and utilities. The Office for National Statistics reported that 92% of students feel that their cost-of-living has increased compared to the previous year. As a result, many students are cutting back on expenses, including food and essentials.
Contrary to popular belief, veganism can be an affordable lifestyle choice. Previous research has shown that vegan sources of protein, such as lentils, peanut butter, and beans, are some of the cheapest food options available. Additionally, nearly half of vegan students find the affordability of vegan catering options on campus to be good or very good.
The Vegan Society aims to dispel the misconception that veganism is costly. They provide resources that demonstrate how affordable a vegan diet can be and offer discounts from their Trademark holders to help students keep costs down. By making veganism more accessible and affordable, they hope to inspire even more students to explore a vegan lifestyle.
According to Hannah Coyne, Campaigns Manager for The Vegan Society, a shift towards a plant-based diet can be both affordable and beneficial. The society offers various resources, including a student basket for food shopping and a collection of easy and nutritious vegan recipes, to support students on a budget.
