Apu's family's low-class life and all the sorrows and hardships are overshadowed by Apu, Durga's love and the love of his siblings, life takes a different turn. The Bengali society of that time has been depicted in the film through unique scenes. Sharing Durga's stolen mango with her siblings, listening to the sound of the train on the railway line, Durga's luscious hair blowing in the wind, teenage Durga's indomitable running, then Durga's sudden departure, Durga's emptiness in Apur's life all took the film to a unique height.

The 1955 film was declared the best Indian film of all time by (FIPRESCI) - a national association of film critics and film journalists. This film will forever reign supreme in the hearts of film and literature lovers, both declared and unannounced.
