• Coronavirus: UK sends supplies to India

More than 600 pieces of medical equipment are being sent to India as the country faces a record surge of coronavirus cases, the UK government has said reports Munia Iffat.

    • India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warned that they are facing a ‘storm’ of coronavirus infections, prompting other nations – including the UK and US – to promise urgent help.

    • India reported 352,991 new cases on Monday setting a global record for the fifth consecutive day and bringing its total number to more than 17 million.

    • The surge in cases has been accompanied by severe shortages of medical oxygen in some areas, with hospitals warning they could run out within hours.

    • More than 600 pieces of medical equipment are being sent to India, said the UK government. The assistance package includes 495 oxygen concentrators, which extract from air as well as ventilators. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, “We stand side by side with India.”

    • The first shipments of equipment leave the UK on Sunday and are due to arrive in New Delhi, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

    • In total, the UK will send nine airline containers of supplies this week, including 495 oxygen concentrators, 120 non-invasive ventilators and 20 manual ventilators.

Meanwhile, the UK reported its lowest number of daily coronavirus cases since early September as Britain’s successful vaccination program continues to prevent a surge of infections.

  • Turkmenistan celebrates new holiday to enormous national dog breed

The central Asian nation of Turkmenistan has been celebrating a new national holiday on Sunday to its national and very large Alabi dog bread with an awards ceremony.

The new holiday took place on the same day as a festival celebrating the Akhal-Teke horse breed, which Turkmenistan also considers part of its national heritage ceremony.

President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has encouraged veneration of the breed as a symbol of national heritage. The award was presented by the president’s son, Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Berdymukhamedov. He appeared at the ceremonial opening of a new complex for the breeding of Alabay dogs in the country’s capital, Ashgabat, according to state media.

Alabay dogs are widely used by many traditional herders in Turkmenistan. They are among the world’s largest dogs, weighing up to 80kg (175lbs). Last year, president Berdymukhamedov unveiled a 19ft(6m) golden statue of an Albay dog in the capital.

  • Johnson under pressure over ‘let the bodies pile high’ comments

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson facing pressure and criticism on Monday night as Conservative insiders claim that the Prime Minister said he would rather see “bodies pile up than order another lockdown.”
But the prime minister has denied making the comments that he would rather see “bodies pile high in their thousands” than order a third COVID-19 lockdown in England.
A front page of a state newspaper’s headline reported that Boris Johnson has said he would rather see “bodies pile high in their thousands’ than another coronavirus lockdown.
The claim followed a briefing war at the weekend between Johnson and his former chief aide Dominic Cummings. The government is also facing growing calls for a public inquiry into a pandemic that left the UK with one of the worst death tolls among major economies last year.
Another source claims that the “let the bodies pile high” comments were shouted from an office in Downing Street after a crunch meeting with ministers.
Meanwhile, another source informed that Gove did not hear the comments himself, and suggested that ministers who did not know if the comments were true or not should not deny them so strongly.

  • Covid19 impact: Liverpool accounts reveal £46m pre-tax loss

Liverpool has reported a £59m and match-day revenue by £13m in the first three months of the pandemic on Tuesday. The accounts reveal £46m pre-tax loss and early impact of Covid crisis. Reports Munia Iffat.
    • Liverpool’s latest accounts have revealed a report that a £46million pre-tax loss for the financial year ending May 2020 which equates to an £88m negative swing from their position just over 12 months ago.
    • Their Premier League season being suspended in March 2020 and completed behind closed doors in July.
    • During this period four fewer Premier League home games meant match-day revenue declined by £13m to £71m.

    • Managing director Andy Hughes said, “This financial reporting period was up to May 2020 so approaching a year ago now. It does, however, begin to demonstrate the initial financial impact of the pandemic and the significant reductions in key revenue streams.”
    • “We can now look ahead to the conclusion of this season and hopefully a more normal start to next season,” he added.
The loss of Liverpool’s was cushioned, however, by strong commercial performance. Eight new partnerships, sponsorship renewals with Nivea and Carlsberg, record sales of the new Nike home kit and new retail stores in Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam helped increase commercial revenue by £29m to £217m.
