Mexico City rail overpass collapsed late Monday night. At least 15 people died and about 70 were reported injured. A rescue operation was underway after the incident occurred.

Footage on Milenio TV showed the concrete structure suddenly giving way during a giant cloud of gray smoke at about 10:30 pm, as cars passed below. According to photos minimum, a vehicle was crushed. Two orange and yellow metro cars slid down into the wreckage, forming a V shape. Other videos showed police, emergency workers and neighbors scrambled through the wreckage, trying to find survivors.

Claudia Sheinbaum , Mexico City’s mayor said on Twitter that a support beam had given way, causing the overpass to collapse. She wrote that “firefighters, public safety personnel are working. Various hospitals attending. We will give more information shortly.” She also added 34 people had been sent to the hospital.

The metro system has inaugurated half a century ago and till then up now it has had at least two serious accidents. a collision between two trains at the Tacubaya station killed one passenger, injured 41. In 2015, a train crashed into another at the Oceania station, there 12 people injured.
